When Reich discovered orgone energy, he claimed to have discovered cosmic life energy!
He believed that it is an omnipresent and spiritual energy that it is just too subtle for anything or anybody to measure it with regular instruments at his time.
Dr. Wilhelm Reich believed that traumatic experiences blocked the natural flow of life-energy in the body, leading to physical and mental disease.

Reich strongly believed that living matter tended to radiate energy, an idea based on his observations of clinical patients releasing powerful waves of energetic discharge as they experienced intense emotional breakthroughs.
Reich confirmed his initial observations with the use of a specially modified electric meter which, when attached to the body with electrode sensors, detected a subtle bio-electric charge.

Additionally he had this idea that a lack of sex could inhibit the flow of something called "orgone" -- Reich's word for life force (before "chi" and "prana" became trendy).

During an experiment with simple organisms called bions, Reich built a special wire cage covered in cotton and wood meant to isolate the bions from external sources of radiation. What followed was the accidental discovery that radiation was emanating independently from the bions and was actually emerging from the atmosphere within the cage. Reich called this radiation orgone energy.

Reich found that certain non-metallic materials (wool, cotton, fiberglass, some plastics) attract and hold orgone energy, and that metal attracts and then rapidly repels orgone energy.

In 1940, Wilhelm Reich constructed the first device to accumulate orgone energy: a six-sided box constructed of alternating layers of organic materials (to attract the energy) and metallic materials (to radiate the energy toward the center of the box).
Patients would sit inside the accumulator and absorb orgone energy through their skin and lungs. The accumulator had a healthy effect on blood and body tissue by improving the flow of life-energy and by releasing energy-blocks.
An orgone accumulator (ORAC) was a container created by Wilhelm Reich to trap and afterward transmit his supernatural orgone energy into a concentrated region.

Having been a disciple of Sigmund Freud, Wilhelm Reich examined the physical energy, which is released during sexual activity and consequently he discovered that this energy, which he called orgone, is life force.

We are very certain that Mesmer's research and inventions in fact have influenced Wilhelm Reich and his work.

Having studied Hypnosis under Freud, he certainly was thoroughly familiar with Mesmer and his theories.
In fact, in European literature about hypnosis, Mesmer and his accumulators of "animal magnetism" are very basic common knowledge, and Franz Anton Mesmer is mentioned as an important pioneer of hypnosis in practically all introductory works on the subject.

Reich may have been pragmatic enough not to mention Mesmer's name anywhere in his works, because Mesmer was widely considered as having been a quack who promoted "animal magnetism" and even showed how to feel it, as Reich did, coming from a different scientific approach.

In Wilhelm Reich's works there is also absolutely no mention of Karl von Reichenbach and his research of life force & life energy.
Reichenbach and his extensive work about life force, which he called "Od," has also been part of the introduction into hypnosis in almost all books about the subject, just as Mesmer, Coué and others.
Therefore, von Reichenbach too, was widely known among students of hypnosis in Vienna, where Reich studied under Freud, and hypnosis was one of the subjects he studied.

Coming from an entirely new angle and living in a scientifically more advanced era than his predecessors, Reich was capable to formulate a significantly more modern approach to orgone energy, an approach, which was as extensive as the research that Karl von Reichenbach had published.

Wilhelm Reich observed orgone energy and he used it for many purposes.
As a first, he showed that orgone energy followed the principle of reversed energy, i.e., that the stronger potential of orgone energy is drawing energy from the weaker potential, and he showed how this reversed entropy was the motor of many biological, meteorological and other processes in nature.

In 1940, Wilhelm Reich constructed the first device to accumulate orgone energy: a six-sided box constructed of alternating layers of organic materials (to attract the energy) and metallic materials (to radiate the energy toward the center of the box). Patients would sit inside the accumulator and absorb orgone energy through their skin and lungs. Furthermore, Wilhelm Reich was the first person to be aware of the existence of "DOR," or Deadly Orgone energy, as he called it.
DOR, according to Wilhelm Reich, is a stale form of orgone energy, which can cause serious health problems in humans.

During his exploration into this mysterious bio-energy, Reich observed that orgone energy flows from the inside core to the outside surface of the body when an individual experiences pleasure or positive emotions and flows from the surface to the interior of the body during states of anxiety or fear. This observation led him to classify orgone into three types: neutral (OR), positive (POR), and negative (DOR).

POR is free flowing and uninhibited, allowing an organism to exist in a healthy state. Reich referred to DOR as the “armored” version of POR, meaning it is rigid and stagnant. DOR accumulates in the body when stress and anxiety are left untreated, resulting in a state of bodily contraction and the activation of the sympathetic nervous system. In order to treat dis-ease with orgone energy, Reich developed orgone accumulators, large boxes lined on the inside with alternating layers of metallic and non-metallic material.

More about DOR (Deadly Orgone)...

With his Oranur experiment, massive amounts of this DOR developed, which made necessary a temporary abandoning of his facilities and the dismantling of the orgone accumulators in that area.

Although Wilhelm Reich apparently was the first scientist to recognize that orgone energy (life energy & life force) follows the principle of reversed entropy, he was entirely unaware of its transfer at any distance.

A closer examination of the processes involved in his "cloud busting" techniques (the devices for cloudbusting were also an invention by Reich) could have led him to this conclusion, as would have a deeper scientific approach of the characteristic of reversed entropy itself.

Karl Hans Welz, soon after having started his own research of orgone energ, he recognized that the principle of reversed entropy, or negative entropy and transfer at any distance, when seen within the space that is defined by electromagnetic energies (the "visual" space), are two modes of expression of one and the same characteristic of life force, just as the principle of entropy and the distance-characteristics of the "visual" space can be viewed as two modes of expression of one and the same principle.

Similar to space-time (indicating that these two principles are inseparable), we can hyphenate the term "reversed entropy - transfer at any distance".
It would go way beyond the framework of this web site to expound more on this.

Karl Welz discovered the scientific basis for the transfer of life energy & life force (orgone energy, prana & chi-energy) at any distance years before he invented the orgone generator® in 1991.

Soon after his invention of the orgone generator®, still during the same year and before he began to market the first orgone generators®, he was capable of establishing proof of this transfer by succeeding in a signal transfer from machine-to-machine.

Witch 'doctors' or shamans of the old, of course, knew about this and used it in their practices for tens of thousands of years.
They needed no scientific proof, since they have had immediate evidence of this characteristic of life force/orgone energy on a daily basis, whenever they did (and still do) their "spiritual" work.

One way of mapping this situation is to view it as being expressed by simple coordinate tranformations: when the space of electromagnetic frequencies (EMF) is set up as continuous, then the space of orgone energy becomes "choppy," non-continuous, and vice versa.

With the establishment of scientific principles and scientific thinking, many researchers examined the phenomena of orgone energy, and they developed specific theories with which they explained their observations and practical applications.

William Reich, The Man Who Dreamed of Tomorrow, written by two of his advocates with a forward by Reich’s daughter Eva, states that between 1940 and 1950, Reich became convinced that a subtle biophysical energy permeates all living things and that:

The orgone is mass-free; permeates all of space in different concentrations; is responsible for all forms of life; is taken into the body through breathing; is present in all cells. . . is especially drawn to water; and forms units, both living . . . and nonliving . . . . [that] acquire energy from their environment. . . .
